In Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), adding more MBBR media may seem like the obvious way to increase biological treatment capacity.

But is more media always the answer?

Not necessarily.

In practice, MBBR performance in RAS is often limited not by the amount of media, but by how well the media, water flow, aeration, and biofilm work together.

Here are several factors that can make a real difference:

1. Effective surface area matters

Two carriers with the same filling volume can provide very different biological capacity. The protected surface available for biofilm growth, carrier geometry, and pore structure all influence how much active biomass can actually develop.

2. Mixing must be sufficient

MBBR media needs to move freely throughout the reactor. Poor mixing can create dead zones, uneven biofilm growth, and reduced contact between wastewater and microorganisms.

Too little movement limits mass transfer. Too much turbulence, however, may also affect biofilm development.

3. Oxygen availability is critical

Nitrification in RAS requires a reliable oxygen supply. Even with a large amount of media, insufficient dissolved oxygen can limit biological performance.

That means diffuser layout, aeration intensity, water depth, and reactor configuration should be considered together.

4. Biofilm needs time to develop

New media does not immediately provide its full biological capacity. Startup conditions, temperature, ammonia loading, alkalinity, and microbial colonization all influence how quickly the system reaches stable performance.

5. The right carrier matters

There is no single MBBR carrier that is ideal for every RAS application.

Different systems may have different requirements for ammonia removal, hydraulic loading, filling ratio, mixing conditions, and operating strategy.

So when designing or upgrading an RAS biofilter, the key question may not be:

“How much media can we put into the tank?”

A better question is:

“How can we create the right environment for the media and biofilm to perform efficiently?”
