Why?
Because MBBR performance is not determined by surface area alone.
The shape, internal structure and protected surface of the carrier influence how microorganisms attach and grow.
A carrier with a higher nominal surface area does not automatically provide more effective biological surface area.
What matters is how much surface can actually be colonized and maintained during long-term operation.
The interaction between biofilm and the media surface is critical.
Some carriers may encourage stable biofilm attachment, while others may experience excessive accumulation or detachment.
A healthy MBBR system needs a balance between:
Biofilm growth → Shear → Detachment → Regrowth
The goal is not simply to grow as much biofilm as possible, but to maintain active and stable biomass.
Even with the same aeration system, different carriers can move differently.
Media density, shape, buoyancy and filling ratio can influence circulation and mixing.
Poor movement may create dead zones, while excessive turbulence may cause unnecessary biofilm loss.
Municipal wastewater, industrial wastewater, nitrification, IFAS and aquaculture/RAS systems may have very different requirements.
Therefore, choosing MBBR media should involve more than comparing one number on a datasheet.
Look at:
✔ Effective surface area
✔ Media geometry
✔ Density and buoyancy
✔ Biofilm retention
✔ Mixing behavior
✔ Filling ratio
✔ Long-term operating stability
Same tank. Same wastewater. Different media. Different performance.
That is why MBBR media selection deserves more attention than simply asking:
“Which carrier has the highest surface area?”
